Hey there, auction fans and treasure hunters! We are so glad you’re back for another installment of our deep dive into the world of sharp stuff….this time, we are talking about one of the absolute heavyweights in American history. If you’ve ever rummaged through an old toolbox or checked out the "goodies" in one of our tool and collectible auctions, you have almost certainly seen the name "Camillus" stamped on a blade.
We just love the history behind these knives because it’s not just about a tool; it’s about the story of American manufacturing at its peak. Camillus was one of the big dogs, the oldest of the old, and for over a century, they produced some of the most reliable, hard-working knives the world has ever seen. Whether you are looking for a rugged military blade or a "fun" vintage pocket knife for your collection, Camillus is a name you need to know….
A Legacy That Starts in 1876
Can you believe that the roots of this company go all the way back to 1876? That is over 150 years of history! It all started with a fellow named Adolph Kastor, who began importing knives before he decided to start making them right here in the U.S.A. He set up shop in Camillus, New York, and that factory became a legend in the industry. For decades, they were the go-to maker for everything from tiny pen knives to massive combat blades.
In our auctions, we often see a wide variety of these treats, including….vintage stockman knives, peanut folders, congress patterns, large hunters, scout knives, electricians' knives, multi-blade utility tools, and so much more.
The cool thing about Camillus is that they didn’t just make knives under their own name. They were actually a "master maker" for many other brands too! If you find a vintage knife from a hardware store or a scout organization, there is a very good chance it was actually born in the Camillus factory.

THE POWERHOUSE OF WORLD WAR II
Now, if you want to talk about "special" items, we have to look at what Camillus did during the war years. We are talking about STAGGERING numbers here….honestly, it's hard to wrap your head around. During World War II, the Camillus factory shifted into high gear and produced between 13 and 17 million knives for the Allied forces!
They were the first company to ever get the contract for the legendary USMC KA-BAR. While other companies made them too, Camillus was the pioneer of that iconic design. When you hold a Camillus KA-BAR, you aren't just holding a knife; you are holding a piece of history that was right there in the trenches and on the beaches.
But it wasn't just the big fighting knives….they made all sorts of essential gear, including….M3 fighting knives, M4 bayonets, massive machetes, Navy marlinspike knives for sailors, signal corps knives for the guys running the wires, and much more.
If you happen to find one of these in an old attic or at one of our auctions, look closely at the markings. Collectors go crazy for the AWESOME SIGNED pieces that show the branch of service or a specific year. These are the kind of "finds" that make the auction process so much fun!
THE LEGENDARY "DEMO KNIFE"
If there is one knife that defines Camillus for the modern collector, it has to be the MIL-K-818, or as most people call it….the DEMO KNIFE. This is that all-stainless steel, four-blade beauty that was issued to soldiers for decades.

The "Demo Knife" (short for demolition) was officially the "Knife, Pocket, General Purpose." It is a beast of a tool. It’s got a spear blade, a can opener, a screwdriver/caplifter, and a punch/awl. It was built to survive anything, and because it’s made entirely of stainless steel: including the handles and the liners: it doesn't rust easily.
We see these all the time in our local pickups, and they are always a hit. Collectors love to try and find one for every single year they were made. You see, starting in the late 1950s, Camillus started stamping the year of manufacture right on the base of the blade. It’s like a little time capsule! We’ve seen them from 1960, 1975, 1982, 1991, 2003….and so many more years.
If you are just starting your collection, the Camillus Model 1760 is a GREAT choice. They are usually very affordable and they are tough as nails. Plus, they look great sitting on a shelf or tucked into a display case.
Working Man's Treasures: The TL-29
Another "eclectic" find you’ll see in our listings is the TL-29. This was the standard-issue knife for the Signal Corps and electricians. It’s a simple two-blade design, but it’s incredibly functional. One blade is a traditional spear point, and the other is a locking screwdriver blade that usually has a little notch for stripping wire.

These knives were made by the millions, but finding one in great condition with the "TL-29" stamp still visible on the handle is a real treat. They represent the practical, no-nonsense side of American manufacturing. We love seeing these come through the gallery because they remind us of the hard-working folks who built our infrastructure!
What to Look For When You're Bidding
When you are browsing our online-only auctions for Camillus goodies, here are a few tips to keep in mind….
- CHECK THE STAMPS: The "tang stamp" (the writing at the base of the blade) tells you everything. Different logos were used in different eras. An older, arched "Camillus" stamp is usually more desirable than the modern block letters.
- CONDITION IS KEY: While a little "character" is fine, collectors really look for snappy springs (that satisfying click when you open it) and blades that haven't been sharpened down to a toothpick.
- SPECIAL MATERIALS: Look for those vintage handles! We love finding knives with….jigged bone, genuine stag, swirled celluloid, tough Delrin, classic wood, and much more.
- RARE BIRDS: Keep an eye out for the "Sword Brand" or "American Wildlife" series. These were higher-end civilian lines that Camillus produced, and they feature some truly beautiful artwork and craftsmanship.

Why Camillus is a Collector's Dream
The original Camillus factory unfortunately closed its doors in the mid-2000s, which means the "true" vintage American-made Camillus knives are now a finite resource. They aren't making any more of the originals! That is exactly why they have become such a staple in the auction world. They represent a time when things were built to last a lifetime (and then some).
Whether you are a seasoned collector with hundreds of blades or just a bargain hunter looking for a cool piece of history for your pocket, Camillus has something for everyone. We are always hunting for these beauties to include in our upcoming sales, and it is always a thrill to see who wins the final bid!
