Part 13: Kershaw & Spyderco

Hey there, knife lovers and auction friends! Can you believe it’s already late May? The sun is finally peeking out and the grass is growing like crazy….which means it’s almost time for yard work, but let’s talk about something way more fun than mowing the lawn! We are continuing our deep dive into the world of pocket knives, and today we are moving away from the old-school wood handles of our grandfathers and jumping straight into the high-tech world of modern classics.

We know many of you grew up with a Case or a Buck in your pocket, but the world of collecting has changed so much over the last few decades. Brands like Kershaw and Spyderco have turned the humble pocket knife into a piece of precision engineering that collectors just can’t get enough of. Whether you are a "hard-use" kind of person or someone who just likes to have the coolest gadgets in the neighborhood, these modern folders are the future of collecting….honest!

The Hole Story: Spyderco’s Innovation

If you’ve ever seen a knife with a big old circle cut right out of the blade, you’re looking at a Spyderco. Back in the early 80s, a guy named Sal Glesser had a wild idea, why use a tiny little thumb stud that’s hard to find when you could just put a hole in the blade? It was a total game-changer for one-handed opening, especially if you’re wearing gloves or just have "working man" hands.

But Spyderco didn't stop there. They were the first to put a pocket clip on a knife (can you imagine digging around in the bottom of your pocket for your knife like a caveman?), and they are famous for using some of the "super steels" that keep an edge forever. For collectors, Spyderco is like the "trading card" of the knife world. They do these "Sprint Runs" where they make a classic model in a special color or a limited-edition steel, and people go absolutely bananas for them!

Kershaw and the "SpeedSafe" Revolution

Then we have Kershaw. If Spyderco is the king of the manual "hole" open, Kershaw is the king of the assisted opening. If you’ve ever felt that satisfying "snick" when a blade flies open with just a little nudge, you probably have Kershaw and a designer named Ken Onion to thank. Their SpeedSafe technology changed everything for people who wanted a fast, reliable blade without the legal headaches of a full automatic switchblade.

Kershaw makes everything from "bang-for-your-buck" workhorses to high-end, MADE IN THE USA masterpieces. Their Launch series of automatics and the classic Leek (which is probably the most famous "gentleman’s knife" ever made) are staples in any modern collection. They are sleek, they are fast, and they just feel right in your hand.

Why These Are the "Future Classics"

You might be wondering….why should I collect these new knives when I love the vintage stuff? Well, just like those old vintage comics or sports cards we auction off, these modern knives are the icons of today. In twenty or thirty years, collectors are going to be hunting for the original "Gen 1" models of these folders just like they hunt for 1950s Case knives today.

We see so many of these AWESOME MODERN FOLDERS come through our doors, and the excitement is always high. Collectors love them because they are actually useful, incredibly durable, and they hold their value remarkably well. Plus, let's be honest, flicking a knife open and shut while you’re watching TV is a pretty great way to pass the time!
