Poké-Mania Part 3: The $16 Million Piece of Cardboard – A Record-Breaking Legend

1998 Pikachu Illustrator card sold by Goldin Auctions

Hey there, fellow treasure hunters and Poké-fans…. we are so glad you’re back for part three of our big deep dive into the world of pocket monsters! If you missed our first two installments, we’ve been having a total blast looking at how this whole craze started and some of the secret facts that make these little critters so special. But today…. oh boy, today we are talking about the big one. We are talking about the "Holy Grail." The kind of item that makes even the most seasoned auction pro's jaw drop right to the floor. We’re looking at a single piece of cardboard that recently sold for more than a fleet of luxury sports cars…. and we can't wait to tell you the whole story!

At Funky Junk Auctions, we see all kinds of amazing goodies come through our doors, but nothing quite matches the electric energy of a record-breaking Pokémon card. Whether you’re a serious collector or just someone who remembers trading cards on the school bus, the story of the 1998 Pikachu Illustrator card is enough to get anyone’s heart racing. It’s rare, it’s beautiful, and it’s officially the most expensive Pokémon card in the history of the universe…. at least for now!

The Legend of the Illustrator

So, what makes this specific card so special? Well, it wasn't something you could just buy at the corner store in a shiny pack. Nope! You had to be a literal artist to get your hands on one of these. Back in 1997 and 1998, a famous Japanese magazine called CoroCoro Comic held several illustration contests. If you were one of the lucky winners who drew an awesome Pokémon, you didn't just get a pat on the back…. you got this legendary card as your prize.

Because it was a contest prize, they only ever made a tiny handful of them. Most experts agree that only about 39 to 41 of these cards were ever distributed to the winners. Imagine that…. in a world with billions of Pokémon cards, only about 40 of these exist! It’s the ultimate rarity. And the card itself looks a bit different than your average Charizard or Blastoise. Instead of saying "Trainer" at the top, it says "Illustrator." It even features a cute little pen icon in the bottom corner and a double-star rarity symbol that you almost never see anywhere else.

Why "GEM MINT 10" Changes Everything

Now, we need to talk about something very important in the auction world…. condition! You might have a rare card in your attic, but if it’s got a crease or a coffee stain, the value drops faster than a heavy Geodude. That’s where grading comes in. Professional companies like PSA look at a card under a microscope to check for scratches, centering, and edge wear.

A "Gem Mint 10" is a perfect score. It means the card looks like it was born yesterday. Out of those 39 or 40 Illustrator cards out there, only ONE has ever been given a perfect PSA 10 grade. Just one! That single, solitary perfect card is what changed the hobby forever. When you have the rarest card in the world and it’s in the best condition possible, you aren't just looking at a toy…. you’re looking at a museum-grade investment.

We always tell our bidders to keep an eye on the details (you pay shipping and packing fees, of course), because those tiny details are what turn a $100 find into a $1,000 treasure…. or in this case, a $16 million legend!

The Logan Paul Effect and the $16 Million Sale

You might have seen a certain famous YouTuber and wrestler named Logan Paul wearing a Pokémon card around his neck during his big entrance at WrestleMania. Well, that wasn't just any card, it was his very own Pikachu Illustrator! He originally bought a grade 9 version and then traded up, plus added a huge chunk of cash, to get his hands on the world's only PSA 10. He even set a Guinness World Record for the most expensive Pokémon card sold in a private sale at over $5 million.

But hold onto your hats, folks…. because the records didn't stop there! Just recently, in early 2026, the market went absolutely bananas. That legendary PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator hit the auction block again and fetched a mind-blowing $16,492,000. Yes, you read that right…. over SIXTEEN MILLION DOLLARS! The winning bidder was AJ Scaramucci, and this was not just a card sale either…. the deal also included a $75,000 diamond necklace and a custom wooden box for the card. That is the kind of over-the-top collector story that makes auction fans sit up real fast. It just goes to show that for the right collector, there is no limit to what they’ll pay for a piece of history.
