From Campaign Buttons to Rocking Chairs: A Guide to JFK Collectibles

Hey there, history buffs and treasure hunters! We are so glad you stopped by the blog today. It finally feels like the sun might stay out for more than five minutes…. spring is coming…. honest! We’ve freshened up this intro a bit so the post stays current and easy to spot on the blog index. While we wait for the flowers to bloom, we’ve been busy sorting through some truly special goodies that take us back to a very iconic time in American history.

If you love the thrill of the hunt as much as we do, you know that some names just carry a little extra magic at the auction block. One of those names is John F. Kennedy. People call it "Collecting Camelot," and it is one of the most eclectic and fun niches you can dive into. Whether you are a hardcore historian or just someone who loves a good piece of vintage Americana, there is something for everyone in the world of JFK collectibles.

We see all sorts of fun stuff come through our doors, and the range of Kennedy items is just wild…. we're talking about campaign buttons, ribbons, badges, medals, tie bars, matchbooks, pens, pencils, posters, magazines, photos, autographs, and so much more.

Starting Small with Campaign Buttons

If you are just getting started with your collection, campaign buttons are an AWESOME place to begin. Back in 1960, these things were mass-produced by the millions, which means you can still find them today without breaking the bank. It’s like holding a little piece of a historic election right in the palm of your hand!

JFK Buttons

Most of the standard "KENNEDY FOR PRESIDENT" buttons are very affordable treats for your display case. You can usually find them for the price of a fancy lunch. But don’t let the common ones fool you…. there are some super rare treasures out there too. For example, some specialty slogans or designs that were only made in tiny batches can be worth a small fortune.

When you’re looking at buttons, you want to keep an eye out for a few things…. check for bright colors, no rust on the back, and a nice crisp image. We love the "flasher" buttons that change images when you tilt them…. they are just so fun! You’ll find all sorts of variations like lithograph pins, celluloid buttons, oversized pins, and even buttons that come with colorful ribbons attached.

The Story of the PT-109

One of the coolest sub-categories of JFK goodies involves his time in the Navy. Have you ever seen those little gold-toned tie bars shaped like a torpedo boat? Those are PT-109 tie bars! Kennedy used them as campaign favors, and they are a huge hit with collectors today.

They represent his heroic story from World War II, and they add a great bit of character to any collection. You might also find PT-109 tie tacks, cufflinks, and even little plastic models. It’s these kinds of specific stories that make collecting so special. It’s not just about the item…. it’s about the man and the history behind it.

Reading Through History

Another great way to build your "Camelot" collection is through vintage print media. We often have stacks of old magazines and newspapers that are just waiting for a new home.

Vintage JFK Magazine

LIFE magazine and Look magazine are the big ones here. They captured so many beautiful, candid moments of the Kennedy family. These items are great because they double as awesome decor…. you can frame a vintage cover and it looks incredible on a gallery wall!

In our auctions, we often see things like commemorative books, funeral programs, inaugural programs, campaign brochures, and even original 1960s newspapers. These paper goodies are a wonderful way to see how the world viewed the Kennedys in real-time. Just remember to keep them out of the direct sun so they stay looking sharp!

The High-End Holy Grail: The Rocking Chair

Now, if you want to talk about the BIG treats, we have to talk about the rocking chair. It’s probably the most famous piece of furniture in political history!

Because of his back issues, JFK used a specific type of rocking chair made by the P & P Chair Company. These chairs have a very distinct look…. they usually have a dark wood frame with a woven cane back and seat.

JFK Style Rocker

While the chairs actually used in the White House are museum-grade pieces that sell for huge amounts of money, you can often find "JFK style" rockers from the same era. They are incredibly comfortable and give you that Presidential vibe right in your own living room.

When it comes to high-end items like this, PROVENANCE IS EVERYTHING. That’s just a fancy word for proof of where the item came from. If someone tells you a chair was sat in by the President, you want to see some paperwork or photos to back that up. Without the proof, it’s still a great vintage chair, but with the proof, it’s a piece of history!

Tips for the Savvy Collector

Whether you are hunting for buttons or furniture, we want you to have the best experience possible. Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind….

  1. Watch for Repros: Because JFK items are so popular, there are a lot of modern reproductions out there. Authentic 1960s buttons usually have bare metal backs or paper labels. If the back looks too "perfect" or has a modern-looking pin, it might be a remake.
  2. Condition Matters: A little bit of wear is normal for something that’s 60 years old, but items in great shape will always hold their value better. Look for clear photos and descriptions in our listings!
  3. Start with what you love: Don't just buy something because you think it will be worth millions one day. Buy the stuff that makes you smile when you see it on your shelf.

Why We Love the Auction Life

There is nothing quite like the excitement of an online auction. You never know what's going to pop up next! One week we might have a collection of vintage jewelry…. the next week it could be a rare stack of 1960 campaign posters.

We try to make the process as easy and fun as possible for you. When you win an item, we’ll have it ready for you at our scheduled curbside pickup. It’s quick, it’s easy, and we love seeing your smiling faces when you come to collect your new treasures!

If you haven't checked out our current listings lately, you really should head over to our auction page and see what's happening. We are always adding new lots, and you might just find that one special piece you've been looking for.

Collecting JFK items is such a rewarding hobby. It connects us to the past in a way that’s personal and tangible. From the smallest pin to the largest piece of furniture, each item has a story to tell. We can't wait to see which pieces of history you decide to bring home!

Keep an eye out for our next LAST BLAST announcements for those final bidding moments! We’ve got so much more coming your way soon…. so stay tuned!
