Welcome back to the fourth part of our massive Poké-Mania series where we've been diving deep into everything that makes these little monsters so special…. we hope you've been enjoying the ride so far! We’ve talked about the history, the secrets, and those crazy expensive cards that sell for millions, but today we are looking at the absolute KING of collections. This time, we are showing the ACTUAL 48,000+ card kingdom of Owen and Conner Gray…. the real record-breaking collection, the real brothers, and the real mountain of Pokémon goodies that made Guinness World Records take notice!
Can you even imagine having enough cards to fill a whole room? Well, for some folks, that's just a normal Tuesday! Spring is definitely in the air….honest….and it's the perfect time to do some spring cleaning or, if you're like us, some spring collecting!
The Kings of the Kingdom: Owen and Conner Gray
When we talk about big collections, we usually mean a few binders or maybe a couple of shoeboxes full of treats…. but Owen and Conner Gray take it to a whole new level. These two brothers from the UK recently smashed the GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for the largest collection of Pokémon cards in the world! As of July 2024, they officially have 48,339 unique cards.
That is just an AWESOME amount of cardboard! They’ve been at this for over 25 years, starting way back when the craze first hit the shelves. It’s not just about having a bunch of duplicates, either…. every single one of those 48,339 cards is different. They’ve managed to collect cards from almost every single country and in almost every language (except Dutch, for some reason…. maybe the Pokémon are shy there!).
What Does 48,000 Cards Actually Look Like?
If you’re wondering how you even store that many goodies, you aren't alone! The Gray brothers have their collection organized into 131 massive folders. And yes…. we are talking about the actual 48,000+ card kingdom here, not a generic stand-in photo and definitely not one of our auction lots. Imagine walking into a room and seeing the real wall-to-wall binders filled with history…. it’s like a library of childhood dreams!
They don't just throw them in a pile, either. To keep a collection that big from becoming a giant mess, they use a strict chronological system. They have every English first edition set ever made from 1999 all the way up to 2024. Talk about dedication!
But a kingdom isn't just made of cards. A true collector's hoard usually spills over into all sorts of fun stuff…. and the Grays are no exception. Their collection includes:
- Vending series sheets (those are the ones you used to get from machines in Japan!)
- Topps Chrome sets (featuring all 151 original monsters in extra-sturdy card form)
- Exclusive promos that were only given out at special events
- Modern alternate arts that look like tiny museum paintings
- And so much more!
Curation: The Secret to a World-Class Collection
You might think you need a castle to hold all these treats, but the secret is all in the curation. Curation is just a fancy word for "taking really good care of your stuff" and making sure it's organized. When you have 48,000 items, you can't just lose track of your Gold Star Charizards! (Fun fact: they have two of those, and they're worth a fortune!).
For the really special goodies: the ones worth thousands of dollars: the brothers don't just leave them in binders. They have them professionally graded and put into "slabs" or protective acrylic containers. This keeps the air and dust away so the cards stay looking brand new for another 30 years.
If you're looking to start your own little kingdom (maybe not 48,000 cards yet, but we all start somewhere!), here is what the pros suggest you use:
- Penny Sleeves: These are the soft plastic "coats" for your cards.
- Top-loaders: These are the "armor" that keeps the cards from bending.
- Side-loading Binders: These are much better than the old school 3-ring binders because the cards won't fall out or get "ring bite" marks.
- Storage Boxes: Acid-free boxes are a must if you're keeping things for the long haul.
It’s Not Just About the Cards….
While the world record is for the cards, most big collectors we know here at Funky Junk Auctions love the variety of the whole franchise. It’s about the "vibe" of the collection! Just to be clear…. these 48,000+ cards belong to Owen and Conner Gray, not us, and wow…. what a kingdom. A great display shelf usually has more than just binders. It’s got the whole gang like…. soft plush toys, metal flip coins from the theme decks, tiny figurines, vintage comic books, old school GameBoy cartridges, and so much more!
We see these kinds of diverse collections come through our online auctions all the time. Sometimes it's a box of vintage toys or maybe some vintage comics that someone found in an attic. It’s always a thrill to see what people have saved over the years. When Pokémon goodies show up, from cards to plush to fun promo items, the passion for collecting is the same!
How You Can Grow Your Kingdom
The Gray brothers have some simple advice for anyone wanting to hit those BIG numbers: "Save your money and be patient." It took them 25 years to get where they are! You don't need to buy 40,000 cards today…. you just need to find the stuff you love.
