Poké-Mania Part 5: The Next 30 Years – Why the Hunt Never Ends

Pokémon 30th Anniversary Seoul Megafesta celebration crowd scene

Well, here we are….the grand finale! Can you believe it’s already May 3rd, 2026? It feels like just yesterday we were all huddling around our Game Boys in the schoolyard, trading stickers and hoping to find a holographic lizard. Now, here we are in the middle of the massive 30th Anniversary celebration, and let us tell you, the world of Pokémon is bigger than ever! The sun is finally coming out, the birds are singing, and the hunt for the next great find is just getting started….honest!

We’ve had such a blast over the last few days looking back at the history, the crazy facts, and those record-breaking sales. But today, we wanted to take a little peek into the crystal ball. Why is it that after three whole decades, we are still so obsessed with "catching 'em all"? Why are people still lining up for new sets, and why are collectors still scouring auctions like Funky Junk Auctions for that one special card?

The Big 3-0 Celebration

If you’ve been following the news lately, you know that 2026 has been one giant party.
Since the official anniversary kicked off back in February, we’ve seen everything from Super Bowl commercials to pop-up parks in Tokyo. Right now, there are some awesome exhibits happening over in Seoul that run through June, and we are personally looking forward to that NHK Symphony Orchestra tour starting this August….it’s going to be something special!

And for all you TCG fans out there, keep your eyes peeled for the "30th Celebration" set coming this September. It’s supposed to be an absolute treat for long-time collectors and new fans alike. It’s this constant stream of fun stuff that keeps the community so vibrant and excited for what’s around the corner.

The Generational Hand-Off

One of the most amazing things about Pokémon is how it bridges the gap between generations. We see it all the time at our auctions….a dad bidding on a vintage Charizard while his daughter is looking for the latest Scarlet or Violet EX cards. It’s a cycle of nostalgia that just keeps on giving!

The "Millennials" (you know who you are!) are now in their 30s and 40s with a little bit of "fun money" to spend on the goodies they couldn't afford as kids. That’s why we see those Neo-era cards from the early 2000s going for such great prices lately. But don't look now….because Gen Z is moving right in! They grew up with the XY and Sun & Moon series, and those cards are quickly becoming the next big "vintage" frontier.

Whether it’s the classic 1996 designs or the wild new "Paradox" Pokémon from the latest games, there is always something for everyone.
It’s that mix of "remember when" and "what’s next" that makes this hobby so addictive.

Why the Hunt Never Ends

So, what does the next 30 years look like? Well, if the current market is any indication, we aren't slowing down! With the TCG market hitting over $2.7 billion recently, it’s clear that these pieces of cardboard are more than just a game….they are a legacy.

We think the hunt continues because of the "thrill of the find." There is nothing quite like clicking through an online auction and seeing a listing for a box of "old cards" and wondering if there’s a hidden gem tucked inside….because sometimes "just a pile of cards" is collector-speak for "cancel your afternoon plans." That sense of discovery is what we live for here at Funky Junk!
