Hey there, fellow treasure hunters! We’ve spent some time chatting about the colorful, fun, and totally charming world of Depression glass…. but today we are stepping things up a notch. If regular Depression glass was the reliable "everyday" dinnerware from the local five-and-dime, then Elegant glass was the glamorous cousin who only showed up for the fanciest parties!
While most of the glass we see from the 1930s was mass-produced by machines (and we love it for that!), there was a special group of companies making something a little more…. special. This was the high-end of the Depression era…. glassware so beautiful it was sold in jewelry stores and fine department stores rather than being given away with a bag of flour.
We’re talking about the "Big Three" of the elegant world: Fostoria, Cambridge, and Heisey. Grab a cup of coffee (or maybe a fancy tea in a crystal cup!) and let’s dive into what makes these pieces so AWESOME….
Fostoria: The Kings of the American Pattern
If you’ve ever seen a piece of glass that looks like it’s made of a hundred tiny shimmering ice cubes, you’ve probably met Fostoria’s "American" pattern. It is one of the most successful glass patterns ever made…. and for good reason! It’s heavy, it’s chunky, and it catches the light like nobody’s business.

But Fostoria wasn’t just about the geometric stuff. They were masters of color and delicate etching too. We always get a little extra excited when we find pieces in:
- Azure Blue (a blue so deep and clear you’ll want to swim in it)
- Fairfax (a sleek, understated pattern that screams Art Deco)
- Pink, Green, and Amber stemware….
- And so much more!
Cambridge: The Masters of Etching
Now, if you like your glass with a side of "wow," Cambridge is where it’s at. These folks were famous for their incredibly detailed acid-etched patterns. Their most iconic? Definitely "Rose Point." It looks like delicate lace has been frozen inside the glass itself!

Cambridge was also the "mad scientist" of the glass world when it came to colors. They didn’t just do green…. they did Emerald and Pistachio! They even created a stunning opaque pinkish-tan color called "Crown Tuscan" that collectors go absolutely wild for. When we’re out hunting, we’re always looking for:
- Rose Point stems and plates
- Caprice (those wavy, water-like patterns)
- Statuesque "Nude" stems
- Vibrant Crown Tuscan vases….
- And so many more treats!
Heisey: The Diamond H Mark of Quality
If you want to know you’re holding the "real deal," you’ve gotta look for the mark. Heisey was so proud of their quality that they marked almost every piece with a capital "H" inside a diamond. If you see that "Diamond H," you know you’re holding some of the finest glass ever made in America.

Heisey was all about class. Their "Orchid" and "Lariat" patterns are legendary for their elegance. But the real show-stopper? That has to be their "Alexandrite" glass. This stuff is like magic…. it actually changes color depending on what kind of light you’re in! One minute it’s a soft lavender-blue, and the next it’s a delicate pinkish-purple. It’s a total "grail" item for glass collectors!

We love finding Heisey goodies like:
- Orchid etched pitchers
- Lariat bowls with those fun looped edges
- Alexandrite stemware (it’s RARE!)
- Crystal animals and figurines….
- And much more!
So, How Can You Tell the Difference?
You might be wondering…. "How do I know if I’ve found regular Depression glass or the fancy Elegant stuff?" Well, it’s all in the touch!
Regular Depression glass was popped out of a machine mold and sent on its way. This means you’ll often find rough seams, little bubbles, or "straw marks" in the glass. Elegant glass, on the other hand, was hand-finished. The craftsmen would "fire-polish" the pieces to melt away those mold marks, leaving them smooth as butter.
Also, look at the patterns! In regular Depression glass, the pattern is usually "raised" because it was part of the mold. In Elegant glass, the patterns were often etched into the glass with acid or cut with a wheel after the piece was made. If the pattern feels "indented" or cut-in, you’ve probably found a high-end winner!
