Hello everyone! We are so glad you’ve joined us for the next chapter in our weaving adventure. We’ve been having a blast exploring all these beautiful "goodies" together, and today we’re talking about something very important….how to keep those awesome treasures looking great for years to come!
You know, they say a rolling stone gathers no moss, but a vintage basket sure does love to gather dust! And speaking of gathering….is it just us, or is the weather finally deciding to play nice? We were starting to think the snow might stay until July! Spring is coming….honest!
Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of basket maintenance, we just wanted to remind you that we have so many fun treats waiting for you in our upcoming auctions….vintage jewelry, old-school toys, VINTAGE COMICS, classic books, sports cards, antique porcelain, art glass, fine china, memorabilia, rare collector cards, and so much more!
Handle With Care (And Clean Hands!)
The first rule of Basket Club is: wash your hands! It sounds simple, but those natural oils on our skin can actually be a bit of a "party pooper" for vintage fibers. Over time, oils and lotions can cause staining or even weaken the materials. So, before you go reaching for that stunning sweetgrass find, give your hands a quick scrub.
When you do pick up your basket, always remember to support it from the bottom. Think of it like a fragile little bird! Those handles and rims might look sturdy, but after a few decades, they can get a bit tired. Lifting from the base ensures your basket stays in one piece and keeps its shape perfectly….no one likes a lopsided basket, right?
The Great Dust-Off
We all have them….those pesky dust bunnies that seem to multiply overnight. When it comes to your woven wonders, a regular dusting is the best way to keep them looking "fresh off the shelf."

We recommend using a soft, clean natural-bristle paintbrush. It’s like giving your basket a little spa day! Gently whisk the brush through the crevices of the weave to lift away the dust. If things are looking extra "fuzzy," you can use a vacuum with the upholstery attachment….just be sure to put a nylon stocking over the nozzle and keep the suction on LOW. We want to catch the dust, not the basket!
Humidity: The "Goldilocks" Zone
Vintage baskets are a bit like us….they don't like it too dry or too damp. They want it "just right!" Natural fibers like willow, grass, and bark need a little moisture to stay flexible, but too much can lead to the dreaded mold.
AWESOME TIP: Aim for a humidity level between 40% and 55%. If you live in a place that gets super dry in the winter, a humidifier can be a lifesaver for your collection. On the flip side, avoid keeping your baskets in damp basements or bathrooms. A happy basket is a dry (but not too dry) basket!
And whatever you do….NEVER store your baskets in sealed plastic bags or tubs. They need to breathe! If you want to keep the dust off during storage, a simple cotton cloth or some acid-free tissue paper is the way to go.
Sunlight: Not Always Your Friend
We love a sunny day as much as anyone, but your baskets? Not so much. Direct sunlight is the fastest way to turn a "vibrant vintage" into a "brittle beige." The UV rays can fade those beautiful natural dyes and make the fibers incredibly fragile.

When you’re picking out a spot for your newest find, look for a place with indirect light. A cozy corner or a bookshelf away from the window is perfect. Keep them away from radiators, fireplaces, and heat vents too. Basically, if it makes you sweat, it’s probably too hot for your basket!
Displaying Like a Pro
Now for the fun part….showing off those goodies! There are so many creative ways to let your collection shine.
- Shelving: A classic choice. Make sure the surface is flat and stable.
- Tabletops: Great for larger pieces, but keep them out of high-traffic areas where they might get bumped by a wandering pet or a curious kiddo.
- Wall Displays: This is where you can really get artistic!

If you’re hanging your baskets, use sturdy hooks that support the body of the basket rather than just the handle. This distributes the weight and prevents sagging. You can create a beautiful "gallery wall" effect by grouping different sizes and patterns together. It’s an AWESOME way to turn your collection into a statement piece!
A Quick Word on "Wet" Cleaning
Every now and then, a basket might need a little more than a dusting. If you absolutely must use water, be very, very careful. Vintage baskets should NEVER be soaked or submerged.
Try a lightly dampened (we mean BARELY damp!) 100% cotton cloth and gently blot the area. Test a small, hidden spot first to make sure the color doesn't run. If the basket feels soft or "mushy," stop immediately! When in doubt, it’s always better to leave the heavy cleaning to the professionals. We want these treasures to last for another 100 years!
